Quattro Engineers Take Transformative Leap In Machine Conversion

Last year the Quattro engineering team decided to focus their skills on a new style refit, taking an excavator road rail vehicle and transforming it into a Mobile Elevated Work Platform.
The in-house R&D department went to work to refurb and refit a Mecalac 14MBX base machine. They removed the excavator digging boom and replaced it with a MEWP boom and basket.
As well as a horizontal reach of 10M, the MEWP now boasts 360 degree turn of the platform for better manoeuvrability in hard-to-reach places.
The Quattro effort came off the production line last month, culminating in a machine designed specifically for the Croydon tramline,
‘The new 360 MEWP is working well in Croydon, working on maintenance of overhead lines’, says John Murphy, Quattro Managing Director. ‘There’s no other RRV like it in the country, it is bespoke.'
The MEWP has a safe working load (SWL) of 400kg in the basket with an En280 Certification and is currently working on rail and road to maintain and repair the Croydon Tramlink infrastructure.
‘It’s a fantastic and versatile machine, now working wonders for London’s twenty-three year old tram system across seventeen miles of track. We’re delighted with the engineering wizardry of our R&D department who were able to visualise and implement exactly what was needed for this job.'
This engineering initiative is part of the Quattro Group Social Responsibility and SBTi Charter to revisit, upcycle and, where possible, reuse elements of machinery to enable effective rebuilds, as part of a company commitment to half emissions by 2030.
